At Waterford LGFA, our games structures are designed to ensure every player enjoys meaningful game time, appropriate competition for their age, and clear progression pathways — from early blitz football right through to adult championships.
Our focus is on player development, enjoyment, and welfare, while providing structured competition at the appropriate stages.
Season Overview
March – October
The Waterford LGFA playing season typically runs from March to October, covering league and championship competitions across juvenile and adult age grades.
Adult Games Structure
Adult Leagues
- Five divisions (Division 1 to Division 5)
- Round robin format
- Semi-finals for qualifying teams
- League finals to conclude each division
Adult Championships
- Senior
- Intermediate
- Junior A
- Junior B
- Junior C
Championships are played in a round robin group format, followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals.
Juvenile Games Structure
Age-appropriate formats designed around development and enjoyment.
Go Games Programme
- Blitz format only
- Non-competitive
- No scores or league tables
- Focus on fun, skills, and participation
These age groups are about learning the game in a positive environment.
Introduction to Competitive Football
- First introduction to competitive games
- No public scores or league tables
- No knockout rounds
- All teams participate in a Festival of Football at the end of the programme
The emphasis remains on development, learning, and game experience.
Development Age Grades
- Shorter programme of games
- Final day played in blitz format
- No knockout rounds
- Focus on maximising game time and skill development
- Prepares players for U14 and U16 championships
Full Championship Structures

- County finals
